Veneers Q & A

What are Dental Veneers?

Veneers cover the front surfaces of a person’s teeth and can address stains or damaged teeth. They are fabricated from thin layers of composite materials or more frequently porcelain. The veneer material can be tinted to match the natural teeth so they blend into the teeth surrounding them. They can correct:

  • Chips and breaks
  • Discoloration
  • Pits and spaces
  • Irregular tooth edges
  • Teeth which look small

Veneers can also assist to enhance the look of jagged or asymmetrical teeth.

How are Veneers Applied?

To make room for the veneer to lie on the front surface, a small layer of the enamel is removed from the tooth. This assists the veneer line up correctly with the adjacent teeth without overlapping or looked too big. Following this, an impression of the tooth is made and deliver to the dental laboratory where the veneer itself will be made to the exact specifications of the tooth. A temporary veneer can be provided while the patient is awaiting the permanent veneer. The temporary veneer will help to protect the tooth. When the patient comes back for the final visit, the permanent veneer will be adhered to the tooth using a special bonding agent. The veneer is then smoothed to ensure that it feels comfortable and appears natural.

Which is Better, Veneers or Cosmetic Bonding?

Cosmetic bonding and veneers both have advantages and disadvantages. Cosmetic bonding is traditionally a single dental appointment process and they are less costly. However, the resins used to construct the products are not a resistant as the ceramics used in veneers, meaning that cosmetic bonding options can be more prone to harm.
